An Observant Dachshund

One major quality that Mum and Dad have always noticed in me is how observant I am. I’m not even sure if this is a general dachshund trait, but please do let me know in the comments or on Facebook if this is something your dog does, too!

For one thing, I’m not an overly excitable dog. I’m on the calmer side (except when it comes to squeaky balls). I like to spend more time watching others than rushing to join in.

My observancy was really noticeable when I flew on an airplane for the first time.  I had never been in an airport before or around that many people. Whenever we would sit down on a bench or something, I would just sit there quietly and watch every person that passed – or dog, which was even more interesting.

When we boarded the plane and found our seat, I wasn’t interested in watching the little TV in front of me, even though Mum put on Dog Whisperer for me. Nope, I hopped across the seats to the aisle. I stood up on the armrest and leaned out into the aisle and just stayed there looking up and down the plane, watching with curiosity as the people went about.

And just like every other dog I’m sure, I like to observe out the car window. Mainly for any babes passing by, but sometimes just to enjoy the scenery, too. When Dad takes me outside from our condo downtown, I like to go hop up on the picnic table and just survey the area. I have to keep a close eye for any squirrels that try to trespass on my territory – and even more so; cats! I’ve never met/seen a cat close-up yet, so you might say they are on my #1 most wanted list of mysterious creatures I want to do away with.

When I’m not in the yard though, I will continue my watch from our condo window. Obviously, this frustrates me all the more when I do see something down in the yard, because I’m stuck up there and not able to do anything about it. As you know, Mum works from home, and she has reported multiple incidents of sudden temper tantrums I’ve had when spotting a something outside. The worst was when a squirrel was sleeping in my tree right outside my window. That was the ultimate insult.. Let’s just say that squirrel better hope I never catch it.

Anyway, another one of my favorite activities is to watch Mum and Dad go fishing. Some people find that fishing is a long and boring sport, especially for the attention span of a dog. But hey, I will calmly excitedly sit by the edge of the boat, not taking my eyes off Dad and the water from the moment he casts to the (possible) moment he brings in a fish. And when/if he does, it’s a big event.

I’m especially observant when Mum or Dad build or do something on the floor (since that’s at my eye-level). For instance, when Mum (can’t remember seeing Dad..) fold laundry, I will sit beside her and casually watch what she is doing.

Same if Dad is building something. I will go sit right beside him and curiously observe what he does. I even offered to help him this weekend when he put together a new IKEA desk we got for Mum. He kept asking me to go get different screwdrivers. Now, I don’t know much about building, but I have an inkling that he just wanted to keep me preoccupied.

Although, I guess I can be a bit, ‘in the way’ sometimes.

But one thing I don’t ‘observe’ is the TV. I’ve heard of some dogs that can just sit there and watch it, but I’ve never been able to, unless of course it was when I was on TV!

So tell me if your doggy is an observer, and if yes what do they like to observe? Do you think it’s a common dachshund trait?

Keep watchin’,

  1. Dear Crusoe- I have the psychic powers to tell when a thunderstorm is approaching. My Mom and Dad bought me a Thundershirt to stop this power. I do feel comfy when it’s snug around me. How do you feel about thunderstorms?

    • I’m usually ok with thunderstorms actually. I only get a little edgy when there’s a giant boom. One time when we were outside (just coming back to the house after a walk), there was a huge crack of thunder right above me. I leapt a foot in the air and made a bee line for the house!

  2. Dear Crusoe,
I am a longhaired dachshund who is so observant, I bark up into trees at squirrels that no one else can even see! I believe that is a super power common to many dachshunds.
    Keep watchin’ and barkin’!

  3. Crusoe, my long-haired dachshund, Kool, is always staring out the window, at the fireplace, or at the front door. I think he has super-hearing. (Although sometimes I think he might be deaf because he doesn’t hear me outside when I call his name.) I can always tell if Kool sees something outside, because his ears perk up and he just stares and stares. (And sometimes barks!)

  4. We think it is a dachshund trait. We always love to observe the situation. Especially our brother, Charlie. We think since he’s deaf that might also play a role with how much more observant he is. We could just sit and stare for hours, unless we pick up an interesting scent. Then it’s game over. BOL! 🙂

  5. Hey Crusoe, this is a little personal, but how much do you weigh?
And who did you fly with?
I always want to fly with my doxies but I worry that they’re too big for cabin flight, but it looks like you weren’t in a case, were you able to sit on your Mom’s lap for the whole flight? Thanks!

    • Hi Emma, I weigh 11 pounds. Usually for the dog to go in the cabin they have to be under 15. I flew with JetBlue, who were very nice to me. Sometimes they let me sit on Mum’s lap, othertimes not. It all depends on what mood the flight attendant is in at the time… Thanks for asking : )

  6. Hi Crusoe,
I am a very observant dachshund, especially with the TV. I will come running from the other room if I hear or see another animal on TV. Plus certain dog commercials really get my attention, especially the doggie denture commercial etc. I will wake up from my napping if I hear a dog barking etc., and I have been known to sit staring at the TV watching some of the programs my parents watch especially when I recognize the music. I love to sit on my mommy’s knee in the car staring out to see what is going on. Another fun thing to do is to try to catch that little white thing that keeps moving all over my parent’s laptop and/or ipad screens. I haven’t caught it yet but I will keep trying! One thing I am really observant about is if my parent’s start making a sound of opening any type of package, you never know what you might find that you could try to eat. But watch out for those plastic bag things, you never know when they might suddenly mysteriously move as if by itself. You will always know when it does because I will dash away from it in a flash. For short legs I can really move when needed.Surprisingly thunderstorms don’t bother me except that I might perk my ears up to listen for a bit.i am a very social dachshund I always love to go up to meet any dog I see on my walks or whenever my parent’s take me to the pet store, but not to get my nails done, I don’t enjoy that time unless I get another person to pet me and talk to me about anything. Just talk to me and rub my ears and I will settle down. Do you like getting your nails done?

  7. Crusoe,
we listen, and watch for any outside activity, we spend hours outside in all kinds of weather. Our Mom’s always trying to get us to come in. The squirrels and birds better get out of our way.
I (Darla) have injured my back while enjoying this activity. I am trying to get over this disability. It is hard to keep up with Misty.
We get real excited about anything outside. We are observant, just not calm. We tell everyone. Don’t mind getting wet, just hate baths.
