Post-Op Update: I Earned My Gold Medal!

Wow, can you believe it’s already been almost 2 months since my surgery? How time flies, especially when you’re locked up inside a cell without the light of day (crate rest), tortured with high voltage needles (electro-acupuncture), or forced to do hard labor every other day (physical rehab).

Just kidding – but that’s how it felt sometimes. It was tedious, boring, tough, and sometimes relaxing, but I stuck to my motto of “Keep Ballin’” and now I’m happy to be a regular dog again – with some caveats of course!

I can’t help but think of all those training sessions in the water treadmill where I just felt like giving up…

But no, I just couldn’t ever let myself “drop the ball”!

You may remember how when I started my rehabilitation, I set a goal to be in the Olympics one day…

Because hey, if I’m going to work this hard for something I might as well strive for greatness.

Well, now that I’ve completed the initial rehabilitation program, Dr. Gumley and the kind folks at Cedarview Animal Hospital (who specialize in rehabilitation) were thoughtful enough to award me a GOLD MEDAL for my outstanding performance!

I’m feeling pretty proud right about now!

And of course, I can’t forget Dr. Jull of the Vscan Neurology Clinic who performed my surgery and did an excellent job.

So, I do plan on continuing with a few things for safekeeping, like the water treadmill to stay strong and occasional acupuncture. (I still have a bit of leg pain once in a while because my affected disc had tethered around the nerve root.

I know my experience has raised a lot of questions and concerns from fans… so I’ve created a page on my site dedicated to IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), including signs/symptoms, treatment options, prevention, my experience, etc, etc.

This diagram is an example of the information I’m providing to help people understand it a bit better..

I’m thankful that I’m recovering well. In fact, I’m hoping this may be my last post-surgery update… (knock on wood!)

I think it really helped my morale to have my brother Oakley around these past couple weeks too. Heck, he was such a trooper as to join me in the treadmill!

Although he didn’t always know which way to go, and we ended up bumping into each other a lot (that’s him in the back, pushing my bum off to the left). But at least he kept it interesting!

And now that I can finally roam the house again, I can choose to relax wherever I want!

So for the first fire we made in the new house, I got to sit right beside it and enjoy it – with my favorite duckie of course! 🙂

But my brother is never far away…

Heck, sometimes he’s right on the other end of my squeaky toy!

But as you may already know, Oakley lives to destroy toys.

So after having ENOUGH of distastefully watching as Oakley destroyed my toys around the house, I was beginning to get a little pissed.

You can tell by my concerned expression here as I look to the camera man as if to say, “are you seriously allowing this?!

But since the camera man woudln’t help me, I had to take matters into my own hands paws, so I ended up stealing the toys away from Oakley that were about to meet imminent death and brought them into my crate for safekeeping.

(Even the ones I don’t normally play with or necessarily care about).

But sadly, a few just didn’t make it…

sherlock-dog-toyThis poor Sherlock Holmes toy literally had his face ripped off.

But oh well, I guess that’s the trade-off of having the company of a little brother around.

Like an little brother, he can be a bother on occasion, but he’s also a lot of fun, and we had a lot of good times over the past couple weeks together…

Like golfing!

If you didn’t see the video yet, check it out here.

And when we had a bath, we wore matching robes!

And for one of the last warm days, we wore matching sandals (Mum included)!

And when we weren’t up to anything in particular, we just hung out and enjoyed some sunshine together…

It’s been swell having him here, but tomorrow he heads back home, because tomorrow I myself am hitting the road again. I’ll be flying to Calgary, Alberta for my book signing event on Saturday. Hope to see lots of you there!

So until next time, my brother Oakley says “farewell, see you soon!”

Thank you all so much for wishing me well, sending me get-well cards and gifts, following along my recovery, and just being awesome fans.

I couldn’t have done it without all of you.

Keep ballin’,

~ Crusoe

  1. Dianne and I can’t tell you how much your escapades warm our hearts with joy. We lost our beloved Cinnamon on 9/16/2016. We were so lucky to have her in our lives for 16 years and 9 months.
Our home is so quiet and empty without her spreading her love and warmth everywhere.
Crusoe, you and your escapades have helped us immeasurably.

  2. Crusoe – So glad your recovery is complete and you do deserve the gold medal for working so hard. All your fans are proud of you and so eager to see your new adventures. I know you loved having Oakley around (even if he did destroy a few toys) and I’m sure he encouraged you a lot because that’s what family does. Till next time – keep ballin’ little buddy and I’ll keep looking for you everyday on facebook – because you just bring such a smile to my face and joy to my heart. Again, loved the golf video – and we all know Oakley cheats (just kidding). Take care and keep up the good work. Love You!

  3. Two paws up, little friends ! So glad & grateful that you have come through your ordeal so well, sweet Crusoe. Will continue prayers that the occasional leg pain you said you experience will permanently go away & that you are 100% all better. I just love all your pictures & videos & I especially like the ‘ordinary day’,casual ones as well. Thank you so very much, Crusoe, for your lovely card of personal thanks to your caring fans. I don’t know how in the world you managed to do that. You went through so much trouble; Bless you & your Mum & Dad for that. By the way, tell sweet Oakley not to chew up/on hard plastic, okay? (Scary for a few reasons!!). Love your little golfing pants, shirts, hats & the music with the video. Those seconds of the snare drum roll when Oakley runs wildly toward the camera & when your little’ arm’ suddenly drops down after your swing, Crusoe ! – – What timing! Perfect editing! Have a wonderful vacay & Meet&Greet with your fans. Always Love & Best Wishes… (You certainly did earn that Gold Medal)!

  4. Congratulations and Big Smile, dear Crusoe. You have come through a difficult time for you and your family with shining colors and even a medal that you so deserve. Continue to get well and strong. I think your Mum’s Dachshund sandals are beautiful and Oakley’s sandals are so cute on him. Crusoe, your little, thong sandals slay me! OMG! I am so sorry that Sherlock Holmes lost his face! I think you’ve had Sherlock for quite some time. Dear Oakley is Duck-hunting now? Uh-oh. I hope that, instead, he can hunt for lost objects from now on, starting with Sherlock’s face. Love you and Oakley, our little Scottish Golfers, and part-time Police Officers, Fre-Fighters, EMT’s, Hunters, ETC. Wow! You are both so multi-faceted; modern Renaissance men! er…I mean dogs!!

  5. You’re a trooper, Crusoe! Great to hear you are doing well….you certainly deserve your medal. I knew you could do it! Glad you got to spend some time with Oakley. I love it when you two get together….never know what antics you’re gonna get into next. 🙂 Have fun in Calgary.

    Keep ballin’!

  6. Crusoe,I forgot to THANK YOU for creating the page on IVDD. (Beautifully done). You’re a teacher and a messenger of Help & Hope to so many people with long-backed dogs, especially. Well done, little buddy!

  7. Been so concerned about Crusoe. Glad he is feeling better and looking like his old self again. Sure did miss him. Many prayers for a fast recovery

  8. Sooooo glad you are better. Keep it up. Love your site and blogs. I tell my Dollie and Astro all about you. They told me to tell you Hi, and “Keep Ballin”. They love that motto, especially Astro. ☺

  9. To amazing Crusoe’s “humans”: Wonderful to hear about your recovery and resumption of activities, including book tour. This book tour deal worries me, though, because no matter how careful your humans are, I distinctly remember some interviewer at the last New York book signing allowing you to jump down from the seat of a chair several times to chase a ball…away from the protection and supervision of your hoomans. I am afraid, given your history, that you will be back to”square one” if allowed to repeat this behavior. Normally I would be excited about a book tour, but I’m sorry, the thought of this upcoming one terrifies me. Unfortunately, there is no room for error at this point.

  10. I’m so sorry, Crusoe, but I have to agree with Miss Dana (above), for I, too, am concerned about your back during this tour because it is only a short time since you regained mobility, etc. I’m hoping & assuming, though, that your Doc gave you ‘clearance’ for this trip. I will do my best, however, to think only positive (energy) thoughts & prayers for you always. Have a nice, relaxing vacation in Banff; You all deserve it! Kisses!

  11. You’re so cool, Crusoe! I know you didn’t think it was funny when Oakley was chewing up your toy but the look on your face was priceless! You’re such a stud!

  12. Love you, Crusoe and Oakley! So very relieved and happy that you are doing well. Can only imagine how relieved and happy your Mum and Dad must feel. Was thinking about the angels around you all, preventing your spine event from occurring when you were traveling far from home over the years. Thank Goodness that you were home when it happened!! I just think that you and Oakley are adorable You make me laugh, Cru, cacheing your toys in your little crate so that Oakley can’t demolish them! How smart you are! I also love how you lay on the carpet with your little legs ‘splayed’ out flat like a pancake behind you! I know you were looking to your Dad a couple of times to rescue your toys from Oakley; I can see it in your eyes and expression! Your birthday is approaching soon, so I have put a little red heart on that date of October 28th. Keep ballin’, sweet, smart Crusoe and Oakley! XXOO (From the “Sunshine State”), 🙂

    • I wanted to also mention that that is a BEAUTIFUL and REGAL picture of you, Cru, with your Gold Medal at your wonderful rehabilitation center, and the good people who help you there. I pray for the lingering leg pain to go away permanently. XXOO

  13. Clearly though you’ll find individuals on both sides letting components of information slip out, perhaps the promoters like it or you cannot.
We are open seven days every week and easily accessible by telephone or internet.

    • Hi Debbie, I agree and just recently alerted Cru’s Dad by mail and on the “contact” place here, as well. Maybe it’s possible to delete it. Hope so. Poor Crusoe❤️ having weird stuff like that on his Blog site. I noticed that there’s a couple other bizarre ‘comments’ on other recent posts, too, and mentioned those, as well, to the little guy’s Dad.
